Grab a date and get cozy in this Chinatown den, an emerald green and gold-beaded pocket rocket with plenty of nooks for knee squeezing and a bit of a burlesque-parlour-meets-oriental-tea-house feel.
The Stiff section celebrates spirit-forward cocktails, which as long-time devotees of boozy serves we interrogated especially closely. It feels properly grown-up and chic but – crucially – never pretentious or unapproachable. Beloved Irish deli staple the chicken fillet roll also makes an appearance – ours was delicious, and massive.
Plus, the space is the sort of tropical paradise you’d expect from a proper Miami Beach cocktail bar—think mismatched lounge set-ups sprinkled about a courtyard with a pool. Stop by the Broken Shaker day or night, and you can be sure you’ll be handed something delicious by an impossibly cool-looking bartender. The vibe here is ’70s glam and the music programming is stacked with DJs Wednesday through Sunday, plus mellower moments like live jazz and samba setting the stage in the evenings.

With leather and velvet touches everywhere, moody lighting from gorgeous chandeliers, every visit feels special even if you’re just popping in for a weeknight libation. It’s a small little spot that’s great for a date or catch-up with a friend. At $16 or $17 a pop, it is a little pricey but worth it for a fun splurge.
Hidden Gem
When we went, we drank Vegemite cocktails as well as one called Chicken Parm (inspired by your favourite pub classic) – and yep, they tasted freakishly spot-on. Pleasure Club – a late-night entertainment venue, cocktail bar and debauchery den by the Odd Culture group – is finally open. Made with gin, Campari and a custom blend of two red vermouths (one rich, one bright), it’s close to the classic – but with a Mucho stamp. Expect 45 amaros from Italy, the US, Japan and beyond, as well as a line-up of excellent bittersweet cocktails, including three riffs on a Negroni, seasonal numbers, and fun and fruity frozen tipples. This is Cantina OK, the standing-room-only bar that since February of 2019 has plied Sydney with good, clean, sort-of illicit fun fuelled by mezcal and backed up by one of the sharpest bar teams in the city. And you can see it all from the two-tiered cocktail bar at the top of the Hotel Palisade.
Operating a walk-in policy after 3pm, it’s overseen by Bar Director, Benoit Provost and the Director of Mixology, Salvatore Megna, with an enviable cocktail list. Set within The Stafford hotel, it has a private cobbled courtyard and serves a range of Mediterranean style dishes. Donovan’s is tucked into the sophisticated Brown’s hotel and is named after 1960’s photographer Terence Donovan – his large black and white prints can be viewed on the walls.
